Milling & Reclamation
What Is Milling?
When a pavement is resurfaced, typically only the top layer of asphalt is replaced. This process is known as asphalt milling or cold milling. It involves the removal of the existing asphalt surface to a certain depth—usually a few inches—to get rid of any damage, deterioration, or irregularities in the top layer.
The Process
Preparation
We prepare the area for resurfacing. This process involves removing obstructions, cleaning the surface, and evaluating the existing pavement’s condition.
Milling
We remove the top layer of asphalt using specialized equipment. The milling machine pulverizes the damaged asphalt, which is repurposed for the new layer.
Surface Repair
We fix any damaged or irregular sections of the subgrade, creating a solid foundation for a fresh asphalt layer.
Application
We pour fresh, hot asphalt onto the subgrade and compress it to achieve a smooth finish.
Finishing & Marking
We apply any additional features, which might include line striping or road markings.
What Is Reclamation?
Reclamation creates a more durable foundation for the new asphalt layer. By not requiring excavation and the removal of damaged asphalt, this process is quicker and more affordable than alternative repair methods.
The Process
Grind & Blend
We grind and blend the remaining material, along with any soil and aggregates, to strengthen the foundation before applying the fresh asphalt layer.
